My journey as the 49ers Fangirl began on January 14, 1990. It was on that day that as a young girl, I traveled to San Francisco with my family for the 1989 NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams. A native Angeleno, I was rooting for the Rams. Then at some point, in the middle of the second quarter, I turned to my mom and said, “I love Joe Montana.” And that was it. I became a die-hard, gold-blooded Niner Faithful and never looked back.

Tracy Sandler and San Francisco 49ers and 49ers Fan GirlAs a teenage girl, I watched every game, dressed in good luck outfits on game days – even if those days were Monday and I had school, educated my teenage girlfriends about Steve Young and Elvis Grbac, while discussing Tom Rathman, Jerry Rice, and Ricky Watters with my teenage guy friends. I cried when the Niners lost to the Giants in the 1990 NFC Championship game – damn Matt Bahr field goal!

Instead of a Sweet 16, I went to Dallas for the NFC Championship game, which did not turn out nearly as well as the Rams game. I was a little older at that point, so I didn’t cry, at least not on the outside (same for Super Bowl 47 and the 2013 NFC Championship in Seattle. I was there for both – kept the tears inside, at least while in public). I’ve cheered on every quarterback from Montana to Young to Elvis Grbac to Jeff Garcia to Alex Smith to now Colin Kaepernick. From 14-2 to 6-10, I’ve stayed strong.

A sportswriter in college at The University of Michigan – Go Blue! (yes I have conflicting emotions about the whole Jim Harbaugh thing, happy to discuss), I decided to start a blog during the 2014 season. I pace during games; I stand during the 4th quarter; I don’t eat on Sundays. My dogs – one of whom is named Kappy – have jerseys. I am convinced my white Kaepernick jersey can be the difference between a win and a loss, while my red Kaepernick jersey is more fickle. I fly to Santa Clara from Los Angeles for every home game. I have a blog about the red and gold. I am the 49ers Fangirl. Like the team, I’ll make you laugh; I might make you cry; but together, we’ll get through it bleeding gold and staying Niner Faithful forever. GO NINERS!

[Podcast EP #64] A Tale of Two Football Teams: The 49ers Before and After Garoppolo

[Podcast EP #64] A Tale of Two Football Teams: The 49ers Before and After Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo is 3-0 as a starter for the San Francisco 49ers, and man, does this feel like a different football team than the one that started the season. And that’s mainly because it is.

Garoppolo has not only solidified himself as a franchise quarterback, but he has breathed life into an offense, and into a team, that desperately needed it. With all the excitement that Garoppolo brings to Santa Clara, Eric Branch (http://www.twitter.com/Eric_Branch) of the San Francisco Chronicle joins me (http://www.twitter.com/49ersfangirl) and Steph (http://www.twitter.com/SoCaliSteph) to talk about this new era of 49ers’ football and what it means for the future of the organization.

We had a lot of fun with this one and we hope you enjoy it too! Go Niners!

[Podcast EP #63] For the 49ers, It’s a Whole New World

[Podcast EP #63] For the 49ers, It’s a Whole New World

Hello 49ers fans! The Jimmy Garoppolo era is off to a great start, as the new starting quarterback led the Niners to a 15-14 victory over the Chicago Bears in his first start. Not only did he make his receivers and the offense better, but the defense was on the field for far fewer plays, making that unit stronger and more efficient as well. Garoppolo is a legit QB, and the San Francisco 49ers have found their piece to that puzzle.

David Lombardi (http://www.twitter.com/LombardiHimself) from The Athletic joins Steph (http://www.twitter.com/SoCaliSteph) and me (http://www.twitter.com/49ersfangirl) to talk about all things 49ers, including:

    The new QB of course
    - The feeling in the 49ers’ locker room and throughout Levi’s Stadium
    - The upcoming game against Houston
    - The benefits of winning, no matter what that does to the Draft
    - And the top needs the Niners have going into the offseason.

    Thanks for listening! Go Niners!

[Podcast EP #62] The 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo Era Begins Sunday

[Podcast EP #62] The 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo Era Begins Sunday

Hello 49ers Faithful. It’s official. Jimmy Garoppolo will start Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Kyle Shanahan informed his quarterbacks earlier today.

When C.J. Beathard left Sunday’s game with knee and hip injuries, Garoppolo came in and dazzled. He was in for three plays, but those three plays were a four yard scramble, a nine yard pass to Aldrick Robinson, and a 10-yard TD to Louis Murphy. Like I said, he dazzled.

With Beathard getting beat up week after week and not being 100%, it is no surprise that Shanahan has decided to see what Garoppolo can do. For his career, Garoppolo is 65 of 96 for 708 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. Here we go.

On this week’s Talking Touchdowns podcast, TheFootballGirl.com’s Melissa Jacobs joins Steph (http://www.twitter.com/SoCaliSteph) and I (http://www.twitter.com/49ersfangirl) to talk all things Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers. It was at the end of the podcast that we got the breaking news that would Garoppolo would start Sunday, so that was good timing.

    Listen to hear:

    • Our predictions for Sunday’s starter before we knew for sure
    • Our thoughts on the matchup with the Chicago Bears
    • Our take on the Eli Manning benching
    • And a lot about Jimmy Garoppolo.

Thanks for listening! And as always, Go Niners!

[Podcast EP #61] Three Fangirls. Two Different Allegiances for 49ers vs. Seahawks.

[Podcast EP #61] Three Fangirls. Two Different Allegiances for 49ers vs. Seahawks.

The bye week has come and gone, and the 1-9 San Francisco 49ers continue their home stand as the Seattle Seahawks come to Levi’s Stadium November 26 for a division rival showdown. Well, they’re rivals. Showdown may be strong for 1-9 vs. 6-4.

On this week’s Talking Touchdowns podcast, Steph (http://www.twitter.com/SoCaliSteph) and I (http://www.twitter.com/49ersfangirl) welcome FSGN’s own Seahawks Fangirl (http://www.twitter.com/SeahawksFGSN), Christina Kaplan, to talk about the matchup. We discuss:

    • The Seahawks “atrocious” offensive line
    • Why Russell Wilson is so dangerous
    • The rivalry between these two teams and their fans
    • Who we think will be under center for the 49ers
    • And why Steph and I think the red and gold just might win this one.

Thanks for listening and Happy Thanksgiving Faithful!

[Podcast EP #60] Seahawks An Easy Win? Kap a Starter? Two Guests Talk.

[Podcast EP #60] Seahawks An Easy Win? Kap a Starter? Two Guests Talk.

After nine painful losses, the San Francisco 49ers finally got a win and are 1-9 heading into the bye week. Even though they were playing the dismal New York Giants, the 49ers played well, played hard, and gave us a glimpse of what this team’s future could be.

On this week’s Talking Touchdowns podcast, Steph and I are joined by 95.7 the Game’s Bonta Hill (http://www.twitter.com/BontaHill) and 49ers blogger Rich Madrid (http://www.twitter.com/rjmadrid) to talk about the win and the 49ers.

Bonta, Steph and I talk about the game, the quarterbacks, and the rebuild, while Rich talks a lot about Colin Kaepernick, the state of quarterbacking in the NFL, and being a veteran among all the discussion of anthem protests.

It’s a very interesting pod that delves into a lot of issues. I hope you enjoy it, as much as we enjoyed recording it. Now, enjoy the bye week. Go Niners!

[Podcast EP #59] Talking Jimmy G, 49ers, and the Warriors with Marcus Thompson

[Podcast EP #59] Talking Jimmy G, 49ers, and the Warriors with Marcus Thompson

The San Francisco 49ers may be 0-8, but they have been busy. The traded a second round pick to the New England Patriots for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and sent cornerback Rashard Robinson to the New York Jets.

For the first time in a long time, the 49ers quarterback situation seems to be solidified, and fans can breathe easy on that one.

On this week’s Talking Touchdowns podcast, Marcus Thompson (http://www.twitter.com/ThompsonScribe) of the Athletic joins Steph (http://www.twitter.com/SoCaliSteph) and I (http://www.twitter.com/49ersfangirl) to discuss:

    • Kyle Shanahan, quarterback whisperer?
    • The trade for Jimmy G
    • The Robinson trade and what it means at corner
    • If I could play left tackle (yes, you read that right)
    • What the rest of the season looks like for the Niners
    • And why Steph and Warriors’ fans don’t need to panic.

    Thanks for listening! Go Niners!

Promising!

They're still trying to nail down the format, and it goes a bit too far to the "fan" side of things, but it's getting better every episode.

Five stars for the high ceiling.

Great Listen

The fan girl and So Cali Steph provide a solid take on all things Niners when you don't want to listen to someone inside the main beat writer's circle. They also have quality guests on. Always look forward to listening to this one.
